Certificate in Homeland Security and Defense

Securing Our Homeland

Everyone shares a responsibility in securing our homeland. That is why Penn State is delighted to announce its new online postbaccalaureate certificate program in homeland security and defense. This 12-credit program is offered by Penn State Harrisburg's School of Public Affairs via the World Campus. It is designed for persons who either want to enhance their professional careers in homeland security or enter the profession, by learning about:

  • the major legislation shaping homeland security policy
  • the key actors and their interactions
  • the planning and organizational imperatives related to homeland security
  • specific homeland security issues confronting Pennsylvania

The curriculum consists of 4 required courses:

  • Introduction to Homeland Security (P ADM 401)
  • Homeland Security and Defense in Practice (Pennsylvania-specific) (P ADM 404)
  • Multifaceted Approaches to Homeland Security (P ADM 802)
  • Strategic Planning and Organizational Imperatives in Homeland Defense and Security (P ADM 803)

Penn State’s convenient and highly collaborative online learning environment provides flexibility while delivering a beneficial educational experience.
All of us play a role in preparing for, preventing, and responding to natural and man-made emergencies. This postbaccalaureate certificate program can increase practitioners’ understanding of the homeland security and defense environment. It provides the basic knowledge needed for entering the homeland security profession and develops the skills that the Department of Homeland Security considers vital for leadership positions in homeland security and defense-related professions.

More Information

The first course, Introduction to Homeland Security (P ADM 401), will be offered starting in the 2009 spring semester (we are now accepting applications, and classes will start on January 12, 2009). We are currently creating a detailed brochure. We would be happy to include you in our mailing list in order to notify you once the brochure is completed. Thank you for your interest!
